Food Intolerance or Allergy Testing
Unlike a food allergy, symptoms of food intolerance build up over time. Allergies are usually defined by break outs of itchy skin with rashes or welts, itchy, watery or red eyes, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting and in extreme cases swelling of the airways.
However, symptoms of food intolerance however can be any or a range of the following:
• Constipation and bloating
• Diarrhoea and IBS type symptoms
• Headaches and migraine
• Eczema or dermatitis
• Insomnia and sleep disturbances
• Water retention
• Fluctuating weight
• Bronchitis and respiratory problems
• Anxiety and depression
• Bad breath
• Weight control problems
(You can learn more about the difference between food allergies and food intolerance in my blog article here.)
Many people with food intolerance find it difficult to pin point what foods they are intolerant to as symptoms are so varied and may not always appear directly after eating certain foods. At Naturology, the type of testing I may refer you to depends on your individual health.
Eliminating these foods from your diet allows the body time to heal; you may also be given nutritional supplements to support the bodies healing process. Depending on your level of intolerance you may find you are able to safely indulge, occasionally, in the foods you are intolerant to once the gut has had sufficient time to heal and digestion is strengthened.
The cost of food allergy testing varies depending on the type of test would be best for you. Broadly speaking, a good quality test ranges between $250 - $480. (This is the cost directly to the lab, and does not include my naturopathy consultation fees.)
There are different types of food tests available and these may look at different antibodies (IgA, IgE or IgG), proteins, inflammatory markers and some even can look at your DNA. How many foods are tested can also impact the cost.
Which test is best really depends on your individual health, symptoms and whether you have had food testing done before.
How to arrange your Food Intolerance / Allergy Testing
Book an Initial Consultation appointment with Josie, and together we can determine the best test suitable for you.
Test collection kits are sent to you, so you can provide a sample at home and mail it back to the laboratory for analysis.
